Preparation Instructions

The procedures below require a specific preparation before the test can be done. These preparation processes result in an examination that has the best diagnostic quality. If the procedure is performed optimally the first time it increases the utility of the test and avoids having to repeat the test in the future.

If you are experiencing difficulties related to any of the preparation instructions please contact our office for further information. We will discuss the situation with you and determine if the preparation routine should be altered.

A.  Mammography

a)  Avoid caffeinated beverages 3 - 4 days prior to you examination.  There is a suggestion that this may decrease the discomfort associated with this test.

b)  Do not use deodorant or talcum powder on the day of your mammogram.

c) Do not wear any make-up that contains glitter.

B.  Ultrasound

1.  Obstetrical (Pregnancy)

a)  Early (Up to 10 weeks)

1.5 hours before your appointment time, empty your bladder and then drink four 8 ounce glasses of water.  Do not empty your bladder again until you examination is completed.

b)  Mid (10 - 20 weeks)

1 hour before your appointment time, empty your bladder and then drink three 8 ounce glasses of water.  Do not empty your bladder again until your examination is completed.

c)  Late (after 20 weeks)

1 hour before your appointment time, empty your bladder and then drink one 8 ounce glass of water.  Do not empty your bladder again until your examination is completed.

2.  Pelvic Ultrasound

a)  1.5 hours before your appointment time, empty your bladder and then drink four 8 ounce glasses of water.  Do not empty your bladder again until your examination is completed.

3.  Abdominal Ultrasound (Including Gallbladder)

a)  Do not take anything to eat or drink for 8 - 10 hours prior to your appointment time except your regular medications with a small amount of water.

4.  Abdominal, plus Pelvic

a)  Do not take anything to eat for 8 - 10 hours prior to your appointment time. Drink water only as per the Pelvic Ultrasound instructions. Take your regular medications with water.

b) Do not empty your bladder again until your examination is completed.

5.  Other Ultrasound

No preparation required.
